Olympic champ pays tribute to Hull apprentices

Hull Olympic champion Luke Campbell MBE presented awards to a host of young apprentices at a ceremony in East Yorkshire – including J&CR Wood’s recent recruit.

Peter Woolfitt was taken on by the firm as an apprentice design engineer last September, while studying with the Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) and started working at the firm’s offices in Clough Road, Hull, in April this year.

He has now successfully completed his first year, and his hard work was recognised at the HETA awards recently, when the gold medallist came along to hand out certificates and inspire the youngsters by talking about his personal experiences.

Mr Campbell, a former failed plumber, encouraged the apprentices to work hard at their chosen careers and show determination to succeed. Peter was presented with his certificate for achieving maximum credits in most of his units in Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Technology.

After initially undergoing training with HETA at their base in Sutton Fields, Hull, he is now working full time in J&CR Wood’s Design and Estimating section under the watchful eye of their Design and Account Manager Ben Sullivan.

They work on designing point of sale displays which are then manufactured in-house for regional and national brands, including AAK, Formica, Samsung, and Dulux.

The firm’s director Ian Wood said: “We are proud of Peter’s success in his first year. He has fitted in really well into our team, and is proving himself to be a hard-working and capable apprentice, and we look forward to continue playing a role in his training and development.”

Peter said: “Luke Campbell is a national hero and it was thrilling to be presented with my certificate from him. It was a proud evening for myself and my family, and I am really looking forward to starting the next phase of my apprenticeship.”

The HETA event was held at the Country Park Inn, Hessle, and was attended by the apprentices, their families, and mentors from businesses.
