Hull engineering firm act as ambassadors for the industry

A HULL engineering firm has signed up to become an ambassador for youngsters to inspire them to enter their industry.

Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) has invited J&CR Wood to become an ambassador for STEMNET (Science Technology Engineering and Maths Network).

HETA hold the contract for Humberside, providing all schools and colleges with impartial advice and guidance on a wide range of related activities to inspire young people.

Barry Wood, director at J&CR Wood, of Clough Road, Hull, said the company is delighted to help inspire the next generation of engineers.

He said: “We have now attended our first Ambassador's networking event and found it a really interesting evening and it was heartening to see all the activities being promoted to encourage and enthuse school and college students into science, technology, engineering and maths.

“We spent time talking to Technology and Engineering teachers and hope to be able to help STEM try to fill the skills gap and produce the scientists, technologists and mathematicians of the future that the country so desperately needs.”

STEM ambassadors give their time and energy free of charge to help young people either by illustrating specific careers, helping with classroom activities, or by assisting in extra-curricular activities such as clubs, challenges and competitions.

Niki Bardsley, from HETA, said: “Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) are paramount in every aspect of our lives today.  The input of employers into schools is becoming increasingly critical to inform students and teachers about the relevance of STEM in their everyday lives and the career opportunities available to them.

“Employers can help schools bring STEM to life for their students through involvement in classroom projects, careers talks, work experience placements or helping with STEM Clubs.

“Local employers, like J & CR Wood, are an invaluable resource to our schools, they are the best people to tell the future workforce about the opportunities available to them within our local area.  There are so many opportunities available within STEM and there’s nobody better to tell the students about them than those working within these careers in our local area.”

Hull-based J&CR Wood was founded in 1950 and manufactures point of sale displays for businesses across the UK; provides sub-contract engineering services, and is known for its internationally renowned range of hand-powered metal-working tools, under the Metalcraft brand.
